Aged care & disability
Councils provide a range of services and support to help people with a disability and older people to live independent and healthy lives in the community.
A different mix of services may be provided by each council to support local needs and circumstances. They may include:
- In home care: delivered meals, respite care, personal care, home maintenance
- Social support and activity groups
- Disabled parking zones and disabled parking permits
- Senior citizens centres and groups
- Accessible transport
- Community buses
- Volunteer programs
- Street-trader compliance with disability access standards.
Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, local government also has responsibility to provide equitable access to all services, facilities and programs it delivers to the community.
