Statement on funding support for communities devastated by bushfire
The State Government today announced $7.3 million in funding for three Victorian councils to coordinate and drive bushfire recovery efforts for their communities.
Each council (Alpine, East Gippsland and Towong) will set up a Bushfire Recovery Directorate for twelve months to oversee bushfire recovery, focusing on rebuilding and planning, economic development, support for the farming and primary production sectors, and the ongoing wellbeing of community members.
Cr Ruth Gstrein, Deputy President (Rural) of the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) said it’s vital that community recovery is driven at a local level and welcomed the prompt release of much-needed funding for councils.
“These councils have been heavily impacted by the bushfires with resources stretched to the absolute limit over the past few weeks.
“This crucial funding support couldn’t come soon enough. It will allow the councils to put in place the right people to work locally with communities on recovery.
“We commend the immense efforts of Alpine, East Gippsland and Towong councils as well as the collective support and response received from the entire local government sector.
“There is a long road ahead. Local councils are best-placed to lead local recovery with critical support from Bushfire Recovery Victoria.
“This recovery model will provide relief for personnel and continuity for communities over the coming twelve months.
“The MAV will continue to support councils and State agencies on behalf of the sector and will support Bushfire Recovery Victoria in its work,” she said.
