With a whopping 2223 candidates throwing their hats into the ring for the 2024 council elections grab your magnifying glass as we dive into the data compiled by our Co-Ordinator of Research and Policy Emlyn Breese.
- 16 candidates found ineligible to nominate
- 42 wards have an equal number of candidates and vacancies
- 47 councillors will take office without a vote being cast
- Ove 40% of the Stand for Council registrants have gone on to nominate for council
- 95% of candidates have provided a vision for their municipality and their relevant expertise, as well as party affiliation.
What really matters to our future leaders? Well, they’re talking about green spaces, housing, governance and more:
- 762 candidates mention “environment”
- 730 “parks”, “green space”, or “open space”
- 702 “development” (50 of whom said “inappropriate development”)
- 453 candidates mention “housing”
- 375 “governance”
- 294 “kindergarten”, “kinder”, “early years”, “childcare” or “child care”
- 282 “cost of living”
- 274 “climate”
- 150 “aged care” or “ageing”
- 76 “maternal health”, “maternal child health”, or “maternal and child”
- 201 used each of the words “roads”, “rates”, and “rubbish”.
