Latest from the MAV Housing Taskforce

Local government stands ready to help deliver the homes Victorians need, all located in great places connected to jobs, health, education and green open spaces.

Councils – and industry – are worried that the current State Government approach is not joined-up in a way that will deliver practical outcomes on the ground, while risking poor planning decisions across Melbourne and Victoria.

The State has sought feedback on a range of proposed planning reforms to ResCode and key activity centres identified in the Housing Statement. The MAV worked with our Housing Taskforce to recommended a commitment to the following good planning principles and engage with councils, industry and communities to:

  • Undertake co-design with councils and industry leaders to ensure proposed plans and provisions align with the intent of the Victorian planning system, community expectations and shared strategic goals.
  • Outcomes must be focused on place-making for growing, sustainable communities and deliver on local housing needs – not just housing numbers.
  • Share information on how plans have been developed, and be transparent why certain decisions were made
  • Give councils a seat at the table on discussions on reforms to infrastructure contributions and ways to do value capture in our activity centres
  • Be honest with communities on the changes coming to their neighbourhoods, and commit to partnerships with councils who know their communities the best.
