Food safety

Local government plays an important role in cooperating with other regulators to protect public health and apply food regulation in Victoria.

Councils register most food businesses in Victoria (except for meat, seafood and dairy food businesses licensed by PrimeSafe and Dairy Food Safety Victoria).

Current priorities

Collaborating closely with the Victorian Government, we seek to support a robust food safety regulatory system that protects consumers’ health without overly burdening business with regulatory red tape.

We do this by representing Victoria’s councils, which register and regulate over 45,000 food premises, in providing input and advice to reforms being developed at the state and national levels.

A key component of our work is developing advice for councils about how to better target their activities towards practices which pose the highest risk of food safety incidents in order to reduce unnecessary regulatory costs to businesses.

Partnerships

We manage the Streatrader online single registration system for temporary and mobile food businesses on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Committees

We represent Victoria’s 79 councils on the Victorian Food Regulators Forum where various agencies involved in food regulation come together to discuss ways to improve food safety regulation in Victoria.

Resources

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between food regulators in Victoria was signed with an explanatory Schedule in 2012. It outlines the different roles and jurisdictions of the various agencies involved in food regulation. Initiated in 2004, the latest version of the MoU is currently being reviewed by the Victorian Food Regulators Forum.
