Youth services

Local government has a long history of engaging with and supporting young people with programs such as:

  • Sporting and recreational facilities
  • Leadership programs
  • Youth festivals
  • Cultural programs and events
  • Mental health and youth suicide prevention support and services.

Current priorities

We work with councils to support the work they are doing with young people in their communities.

In addition to this, many councils have programs for young people who are disadvantaged or at risk of missing out on opportunities offered by education and employment.

We have partnered with Youth Development Australia on their National Youth Commission into Youth Unemployment and Transitions Report (PDF - 1.95MB). The Commission will act as a ‘citizen’s royal commission’ that places an emphasis on evidence and testimony from a wide range of stakeholders.

Supported by the MAV, the Commission provides an avenue to facilitate improved responses to key issues of school retention, early school leaving, transition issues from school to work, vocational training and youth employment and unemployment, which are of concern to all councils.
